Does raw liver help relieve PMS?

Nutritional Benefits

I have been reading for months now about how organ meats should be incorporated into well-balanced diet. Liver is often recommended because it is the most nutrient-dense of the organ meats. It is a good source of vitamin A, vitamin B12, folate, iron, and selenium– all important nutrients for liver health, detoxification, and PMS relief.

The nutritional profile of liver varies by animal, but here is a comparison between the daily value (%) of the two most common sources of liver: beef and chicken.

Beef Liver (Raw) Chicken Liver (Raw)
Amount per ounce %DV Amount per ounce %DV
Vitamin A 4732 IU 95% 3102 IU 62%
Riboflavin 0.8 mg 45% 0.5 mg 29%
Folate 81.2 mcg 20% 165 mcg 41%
Vitamin B12 16.6 mcg 277% 4.6 mcg 77%
Iron 1.4 mg 8% 2.5 mg 14%
Zinc 1.1 mg 7% 0.7 mg 5%
Copper 2.7 mg 137% 0.1 mg 7%
Selenium 11.1 mcg 16% 15.3 mcg 22%

Some women have boasted about how raw liver eliminated (or at least relieved) many symptoms of PMS, including mood swings, pain, and fatigue. I also read that it made the menstrual flow shorter and lighter.

Although eating an organic, grain-free, whole food diet has helped relieve serious PMS (PMDD), I still struggle with intense pain, depression, and other symptoms resulting from endometriosis. Following recommendations from Lauren Geertsen’s Quit PMS e-book, I decided the next step was to incorporate raw liver into my diet.

My experience (trial) so far…

Although I incorporated raw liver into my diet shortly after my last cycle, so far I have noticed the following benefits:

  • Increased energy
  • Clearer skin
  • Better mood
  • Improved sense of well-being

On a daily basis, I consume 3 to 6 frozen liver pills made from organic, pastured chicken. I decided to eat chicken liver instead of beef liver due to beef liver’s incredibly high copper content.

I kept a detailed log of my menstrual symptoms from my last cycle and will be making comparisons over the upcoming months. I am feeling hopeful about finally eliminating (or at least controlling) my terrible PMS and endometriosis.

    1. Oh yeah? I think cooked liver is gross! I tried to do that before the raw frozen liver pills because the thought of freezing raw liver disgusted me. Here’s a good article on making your own liver pills:

The frozen pills don’t have much flavor. I find them just as easy to swallow as Magnesium or some other supplement. They thaw quickly though, so it’s best to eat them right out of the freezer. Let me know if you try them.

    1. So far, so good. Even if it doesn’t relieve my PMS as much as I hoped, it has made me feel better. I should know in about a week or so if my PMS has improved. 🙂 Thanks for reading!
